Information about ELTERN-AG for English readers

All children need equal opportunities... ELTERN-AG helps children with
less favourable conditions in early life by first supporting their parents.

Why ELTERN-AG?

The OECD’s PISA (Program for International Student Assesment) survey in 2000 studied educational outcomes in children from 43 countries across the world.
The survey showed that even within the abundant welfare state of Germany, children from poorer families had very little chance of achieving a high-school diploma, let alone a university degree. Generally, these children had fewer chances of success in life and suffered crucial disadvantages.

What is ELTERN-AG?

ELTERN-AG ist a community-based self-help training programme for disadvantaged parents. It offers parents mentoring support and connects them to local networks, including doctors, teachers and childcare organisations. This reduces social isolation and neglect and helps partents to bond with their children.
As a result 78 % of parents who took part in the programme believe they had a better relationship with their children.

From 2004 until 2016 ELTERN-AG reached 3,667 parents with about 8,274 children by 301 trained mentors.
